  • 3 July, 2024 - Forum - Friends of Wisdom

    3 July, 2024

    Hosted by David Turnbull

A quote from the Introduction to a book called "The Human Condition" by Hannah Arendt
"What I propose in the following is a reconsideration of the human condition from the vantage point of our newest experiences and our most recent fears. This, obviously, is a matter of thought, and thoughtlessness - the heedless recklessness or hopeless confusion or complacent repetition of “truths” which have become trivial and empty - seems to me among the outstanding characteristics of our time. What I propose, therefore, is very simple: it is nothing more than to think what we are doing ( p.5)."
I would like to take this quotation, very explicitly, as our overarching theme. The aim of our group is to articulate thoughts that exemplify having thought long and hard about topics that have been rendered trivial and empty, either by the media or in everyday life. The way we will do this is to start by writing down some of these thoughts.
What I propose for the group is that each of us bring along a page of around 300 words, on any topic you like, so long as it shows that you are thinking. This might be a synopsis of a potentially much longer piece, or an actual piece you have already written.
What I want us to investigate are topics that are hard. This may mean hard even to put into words. You may feel like you are up against "the limits of my language" (Wittgenstein). So this group will be a challenge.
The role of each of us in the group will be to ask questions. By doing this it may stimulate more thinking and promote a philosophical conversation amongst ourselves.
